Beautifully crafted and rare porcelain figures playing cards by Fiorenzo Meneghetti for Capodimonte. Signed and accompanied by a sticker from the Vittoria Expo in 1974.

Measures 30cm by 22cm across the base and stands approximately 24cm high.  Overall in excellent condition however we suspect the card player on the left would have originally been holding some cards.

The Scene:

Two men hunched over a worn wooden table; their faces etched with lines of tension. The flickering candlelight casts elongated shadows across the room, emphasizing the creases on their brows. The air hangs heavy with anticipation, thickened by the acrid scent of tobacco and the lingering bitterness of whiskey.

The Players:

Marco, the older of the two, wears a threadbare waistcoat. His sun-kissed skin bears the marks of labour—roughened hands that have toiled in fields and factories. His eyes, once bright with dreams, now hold a simmering resentment.

Giovanni, the younger, leans forward, his knuckles white as he grips the cards. His dishevelled hair falls across his forehead, obscuring eyes that mirror the storm outside. Giovanni’s desperation is palpable; he’s staked more than money on this game.

The Cards:

The deck lies scattered, revealing glimpses of fate. Aces peek from beneath calloused fingers. Each card holds promises and betrayals, fortunes won and lost.

The Bottle:

The amber liquid in the bottle glows like a forbidden elixir. Its label, faded and illegible, hints at stories untold. Marco’s fingers trace the glass, seeking solace or courage—it’s hard to tell which. Giovanni avoids its gaze, knowing that drowning sorrows won’t change the cards dealt.

The Dog:

At their feet, a scruffy mutt named Lupo rests. His loyalty unwavering, Lupo watches the game with canine wisdom. His eyes, too, hold secrets—the scent of betrayal, the echo of laughter, and the taste of tears. Lupo knows more about these men than they realize.

Anger and Desperation:

Their expressions mirror the stakes. Marco’s jaw clenches; he’s been on the losing end too many times. Giovanni’s eyes narrow, calculating odds and debts. The room crackles with their shared fury—the culmination of years of rivalry, broken promises, and shattered dreams.

The Outcome:

Will Marco’s weathered hand reveal a winning hand, or will Giovanni’s youthful recklessness prevail? Fate hangs in the balance, and the room seems to hold its breath. Perhaps redemption lies in the next card drawn, or perhaps they’re both doomed to repeat this cycle until the end of days.

And so, the game continues—a microcosm of life itself. Two souls, bound by fate, battling not only for victory but for a glimpse of salvation. The candle flickers, casting dancing shadows on the walls, and the world outside remains oblivious to their struggle.

A masterpiece that captures the fragility of human existence, where anger and desperation collide, and the cards decide more than mere fortunes.
